Righting themselves via their long-awaited return to rock Accelerate, R.E.M. regrouped and rediscovered their core strengths as a band, strengths they build upon on its 2011 sequel, Collapse into Now. Cautiously moving forward from Accelerate’s Life's Rich Pageant blueprint, R.E.M. steer themselves toward the pastoral, acoustic moments of Out of Time and Automatic for the People without quite leaving behind the tight, punchy rockers that fueled Accelerate’s race to the end zone. This broadening of the palette is as deliberate as Accelerate’s reduction of R.E.M. to ringing Rickenbackers, and while it occasionally feels as if the bandmembers sifted through their past to find appropriate blueprints for new songs, there is merit to their madness. R.E.M. embrace their past to the extent that they disdain the modern, reveling in their comfortable middle age even if they sometimes slip into geezerhood, with Michael Stipe spending more than one song wondering about kids these days. He’s not griping; he’s merely accepting his age, which is kind of what R.E.M. do as a band here, too. Over a tight 41 minutes, they touch upon all the hallmarks from when Bill Berry still anchored the band, perhaps easing up on the jangle but devoting plenty of space to rough-hewn acoustics and mandolin, rushing rock & roll, and wide-open, eerie mood pieces that sound like rewrites of “E-Bow the Letter.” Any slight element of recycling is offset by craft so skilled it almost seems casual. This may impart a lack of urgency to Collapse into Now but it also means that it delivers R.E.M. sounding like R.E.M., something that has been in short supply since the departure of Berry. ---Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic Review

Grupa R.E.M. wydała znowu znakomity album. Kiedy zaczynali blisko 30 lat temu byli jedynie ulubieńcami młodzieży uniwersyteckiej w USA. Dziś ich muzyka mimo, że ma zasięg globalny , wcale nie straciła alternatywnego charakteru. Jaka jest wiec nowa płyta zespołu z miasta Athens w stanie Georgia ?Pełna energii , zapału i młodzieńczego entuzjazmu.Materiał muzyczny nagrywany został początkowo w Stanach pod kierunkiem tego samego producenta Jacknifa ,odpowiedzialnego za ich poprzedni album „Accelerate” i którego zarekomendował zespołowi Bono z U2 . Za pewnie też za jego namową zespół znalazł się w berlińskim studiu nagraniowym -Hansa Studio.To tu nagrywał pod koniec lat 70 -tych swoje nowofalowe płyty David Bowie ,potem Depeche Mode i również tu powstała legendarna płyta „Achtung Baby”U2.Efekty sesji przyniosły niesamowity rezultat. Do nagrania nowej płyty zaproszono wielu znakomitych muzyków-Eddiego Veddera z PearlJam,kontrowersyjną, kanadyjską wokalistkę Merill Beth Nisker znaną jako „Peaches” oraz dawno nie słyszaną Patti Smith.

Są na tej płycie znakomite , energetyczne numery - „All the best” czy też zabawny „Alligator-Aviator-Autopilot-Antimator”. Płytę promuje charakterystyczny dla stylu zespołu utwór”Uberlin” o mądrym ,filozoficznym tekście. Mamy tu też piękne ballady – prosto zagrana , trochę w stylu „Loosing my religion”-„Oh my heart” pełny odniesień do Nowego Orleanu ,którego mieszkańcy srogo zostali dotknięci przez kataklizm przed paru laty oraz nostalgiczny „Me, Marlon Brando,Marlon Brando and I”.Koniecznie trzeba zobaczyć video do utworu”Mine smell like honey”gdzie wyczyny ekwilibrystyczne Michaela Stipe’a budzą podziw i gwarantowaną zabawę.Całosc tej 40 minutowego wydawnictwa zamyka niesamowity „Blue” z melorecytacją Stipe’a wspomaganego przez Patti Smith,który jednocześnie przechodzi w początek utworu”Discoverer”,otwierajacy płyte „Collapse Into Now”.Tak wiec przy prawidłowym ustawieniu odtwarzacza CD ta muzyka może trwać non stop .Na koniec coś pozytywnego na wiosnę. Tu chciałbym zacytować naszych muzyków, którzy w ”Everyday is yours to win”śpiewają „…Każdy dzień jest za każdym razem nowy Każdy dzień jest Twój , po to aby wygrać I w taki sposób rodzą się bohaterowie…” Bierzmy się wiec do pracy !!
