It is unclear where singer Carlos Gardel was born. Reports vary, but he was born either in 1887, in Tacuarembó, Uruguay or in 1890 in Toulouse, France. Either way, he was in Argentina by the age of six. He became famous for his tango ballads, which were played in nightclubs and in films in the 1920s and 1930s.
