Legendary French composer and actor Charles Aznavour has died at the age of 94. The singer/songwriter, often called “The Sinatra of France,” enjoyed a career spanning more than eight decades. He died suddenly at his home in the Alpilles mountain range sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning, according to his spokesman. His cause of death is currently unknown.

Aznavour wrote songs recorded by Édith Piaf, Juliette Gréco, Liza Minnelli, Elton John and Elvis Costello — and, of course, Sinatra himself. His signature songs, immensely popular for their cabaret styling and romantic melodies, include “Yesterday When I Was Young,” “She,” “Formidable,” “I Love Paris In The Month of May” and “La Boheme.” In all, he wrote over 40 classics in French, English, German and Spanish.

Born in 1924 in Paris’ St. Germain district to Armenian refugees, Aznavour left school at an early age to pursue a musical career, traveling in France and Belgium with a children’s troupe. Initially, Aznavour remained in the background, writing songs while honing his own music hall performance style until nearing his thirties when he began working with Edith Piaf. Encouraged by the singer, he wrote material for her and served as her opening act in concert.

As a recording artist, he sold nearly 200 million records, earned 40 gold records and continued performing on concert stages worldwide until his death. An internationally recognized actor, he was also featured in over 60 films — including François Truffaut’s 1960 New Wave classic Shoot the Piano Player, Candy (with Marlon Brando and Ringo Starr) and 1980’s Academy Award winning film The Tin Drum.

The artist suffered a broken arm three months ago, which forced him to reschedule a series of Japanese concerts for November. Just last Thursday he performed on a French talk show. Appearing in good form, according to Le Parisian, he told the host he intended to live to 100.

On le croyait immortel, à le voir encore debout sur scène à 94 ans. L'annonce de la mort de Charles Aznavour, alors qu'il rentrait d'une tournée au Japon et préparait de nouveaux concerts en France, a surpris le monde du spectacle et tout le pays ce lundi. L'une des dernières icônes de la chanson française s'est éteinte chez elle, dans les Alpilles, dans la nuit de dimanche à lundi, alors que rien ne laissait envisager ce décès très soudain. Charles Aznavour était encore à la télévision vendredi, il a été aperçu dans la commune de Mouriès où il avait élu domicile il y a quelques années, l'humoriste Michel Leeb raconte avoir passé son dimanche après-midi avec le chanteur "en pleine forme". Ce mardi matin, une autopsie doit être pratiquée pour déterminer la cause exacte de la mort de Charles Aznavour. Une pratique somme toute courante, y compris dans le cas d'une mort manifestement naturelle, chez un individu âgé. "Le caractère suspect du décès peut être écarté", a d'ailleurs tenu à rassurer le procureur de Tarascon. Dans le même temps les hommages à Charles Aznavour vont continuer à affluer et la question d'un hommage national, réclamé par de nombreux fans mais aussi par l'ancien chef de l'Etat François Hollande, va se poser. W nocy z niedzieli na poniedziałek w wieku 94 lat zmarł legendarny francuski piosenkarz, kompozytor i aktor Charles Aznavour - poinformowali jego rzecznicy prasowi. Artysta zmarł w swoim domu w Prowansji, na południu kraju.

Aznavour, legenda francuskiej piosenki, latem wrócił z tournee w Japonii. Trasę musiał przerwać ze względu na złamanie ręki, którego doznał w wyniku upadku. Na październik, listopad i grudzień miał zaplanowane kolejne występy.

O śmierci artysty poinformowało także francuskie ministerstwo kultury. Dziękujemy, Panie Aznavour - zatweetował rzecznik rządu Benjamin Griveaux. Jak podaje agencja AFP, do śmierci doprowadziła go nagromadzenie problemów ze zdrowiem.

Urodzony 22 maja 1924 roku w Paryżu Aznavour, a właściwie Szahnur Warenag Aznawurian, pochodził z ormiańskiej rodziny. Wykonywał głównie piosenki literackie, również do własnych słów i muzyki. Napisał ponad tysiąc piosenek, a jego albumy sprzedały się - według różnych szacunków - w 150-200 mln egzemplarzy. W przeprowadzonej w 1999 roku internetowej ankiecie amerykańskiej telewizji CNN i tygodnika "Time" Aznavour został uznany za największego estradowego artystę XX wieku.

Kariera Aznavoura rozpoczęła się od współpracy z Edith Piaf. Na przełomie lat 40. i 50. akompaniował artystce na scenie i pisał dla niej piosenki. Swój pierwszy tekst do utworu, "Je hais les dimanches" (fr. nienawidzę niedziel), napisał w 1950 roku w Nowym Jorku; piosenkę śpiewała m.in. Juliette Greco.

W czasie swojej ponad 80-letniej kariery nazywany francuskim Frankiem Sinatrą Aznavour do śmierci koncertował na całym świecie i śpiewał w wielu językach (oprócz francuskiego m.in. po angielsku, hiszpańsku, włosku czy ormiańsku). W latach 1963 i 1969 z występami odwiedził Polskę. ---rmf24.pl
