Cihat Aşkın - violin

General music lovers know the name Rodolphe Kreutzer (1766-1831) as dedicatee of Beethoven’s famous Op. 47 sonata. However, violinists invariably associate Kreutzer with his 42 technical studies. Most of these stand out for pedagogical rather than aesthetic value, yet genuine musical invention sometimes seeps through the drudgery. For example, among the trill-based studies I enjoy No. 17’s bouncy rhythms and effective register shifts, while No. 36 is an ingenious minor-key two-voice exercise consisting of a staccato melody supported by a legato accompaniment.

Naturally you wouldn’t want to traverse all the studies in a single bound, yet a CD reference version can be of great use to students and teachers. Cihat Askin premiered the cycle on disc in 2003 for the obscure Kalan label, and his suave, fluent, and relaxed performances are well worth tracking down. ---Jed Distler, classicstoday.com
