Leonard Rose – cello
Eugene Ormandy – conductor

Leonard Rose was one of the truly great cellists of the 20th century. His constant attention to the beauty of tone is apparent at all times. This CD's collection of works in extremely varied styles is a testament to Rose's versatility and ability to be at home in all musical situations. One only needs to listen to the contrast between the technical fireworks of Tchaikovsky's Variations and the lyrical intensity of Bloch's Schelomo to see that this is an artist of intelligence and beautiful musicianship. One can also note the lack of affectation in the interpretations thus allowing the musical arguments to speak freely and naturally. I strongly recommend this recording. Excellent supplements to this recording would be Rose's Dvorak Concerto, Brahms' Double Concerto (w/Stern), and all of the wonderful piano trio recordings with Isaac Stern and Eugene Istomin. ---Daniel Klingler
