Mexican performer Luis Miguel is an international star who is loved for his well-produced albums and strong live performances. Since 1990, he has been one of the most popular performers in Latin America; beloved enough to be referred to as "El Sol de México" ("The sun of Mexico"). In the United States, he was the first Latino artist to have two Spanish-language albums, Romance and Segundo Romance, go platinum. The latter release won him one of his five Grammys; it also earned a total of 34 platinum records throughout South and Central America. Miguel's international stardom was heavily recognized in 2000, when he took home two awards -- for Male Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Album -- at the first annual Latin Grammy Awards. Another accolade came in 2003, when he was nominated in the Favorite Latin Artist category of the American Music Awards. Other highlights throughout his discography include Amarte Es un Placer (1999), the tour for which broke his previous record for the highest-grossing Latin artist tour; México en la Piel (2004), which sold three million copies worldwide; Complices (2008), an overdue collaboration with Manuel Alejandro; and a self-titled album (2010) that marked his 40th birthday. ---Sandra Brennan, Rovi

El Concierto is a double disc set of Luis Miguel's greatest hits performed live in concert. Miguel throws in a couple of Mexican and mariachi standards that haven't appeared on his album, making the package a necessity for fans. In fact, El Concierto works as a good introduction to the singer, since it features his biggest hits and he gives a flashy, impassioned performance which shows why he is one of Latin music's biggest stars. ---Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

If ever an artist deserved a deluxe retrospective, Mexico's Luis Miguel is him. Miguel began his career at the age of 11 and released his first album, Un Sol, in 1982, but his career as a teen pop singer began taking off in earnest after he signed to Warner Music, which released Soy Como Quiero Ser in 1987 and followed it up with Busca una Mujer in 1988. He has continually topped the Latin charts and has won two Grammys. In 1990 he began to shift his sound to more traditional romantic material and has followed that path ever since, down the winding road where he melded traditional son and popular styles from soul to disco to the lush romantic crooning of his fully mature style into a signature of his own. This collection contains two CDs with 26 cuts, culled from albums spanning nearly two decades. It's fascinating to hear his development from being a brash teen idol to a mature song stylist who commands respect everywhere he goes. Miguel is a serious player in a field that is intensely loyal. In other words, he never had to work as hard as he has, but he pushes his own envelope, is aware of his strengths, and is never satisfied to merely play to them. Some of the music here sounds dated, it's true, but the way the trajectory works is utterly engaging and worthwhile. Fans will want this keepsake, without a doubt. For those who got on the boat late, Grandes Exitos is a way in, to learn the labyrinthine path of a truly remarkable artist and one of the great singers of our time. ---Thom Jurek, Rovi

After a release that was challenging and conceptual (2008’s Complices found Latin maestro Manuel Alejandro writing and producing the album in total) Luis Miguel’s 2010 effort is a self-titled return to basics, filled with Latin pop that’s built with radio play in mind. Easygoing opener and lead-off single “Labios de Miel” sets a lighter tone right from the start, then “Mujer de Fuego” brings the ‘80s-flavored funk before “Tres Palabras” becomes the album’s first ballad, and a very lush one at that. The cycle repeats 'til the album comes to a close, and while some might think Miguel’s coasting after gaining artistic credibility with Complices, fans who gravitate toward his ‘80s releases will find this one a welcome flashback. ---David Jeffries, Rovi

This compilation album reunites on one CD all the greatest boleros from the "Romances" series (six albums, starting with 1989's Romance and ending with 2001's Mis Romances). After four albums in which Luis Miguel recreated the classic tunes from the genre, this album is supposed to close this era. Some of the greatest hits in Spanish, in any genre, are included here, like "No Sé Tú," "Somos Novios," "El Día Que me Quieras," and "Solamente una Vez."

There's only one new song: the bonus track "Hasta Que Vuelvas." The first edition included a bonus DVD with seven videos. For any die-hard fan, this is the only reason to buy this album. If you don't have any of the "Romances" series' boleros, and you are looking for classic songs and good vocal performances, then this is the right album for you. ---Iván Adaime, Rovi

Luis Miguel's 1996 album Nada Es Igual was the follow-up to his hugely successful live album El Concierto, and his first pop album since 1993's Aries. The album, albeit a pop album, has a definite jazz feel to it, evident on some of the more upbeat numbers such as "Si Te Vas" and "Todo Por Su Amor," which utilize ample amounts of horns. There are also the requisite ballads, similar in style to the standards that have helped make him a worldwide superstar, such as "Abrazame," "Nada Es Igual," and the lovely "Que Tu Te Vas." Miguel ups the ante on a few numbers, notably the hit "Dame," with its underlying hip-hop rhythms, and "Como Es Posible Que a Mi Lado," which incorporates elements of house music. Also included is the song "Suena" which, when performed under the title "Someday" by the vocal group All-4-One and used as the theme for the Disney film The Hunchback of Notre Dame, became a hit in the U.S. However varied the musical styles, this album is basically middle-of-the-road, romance-themed music, which is what his legions of fans have come to expect. ---Jose F. On 33, Latin superstar Luis Miguel sticks to his guns, belting out more light pop tunes on this all-Spanish-language outing. "Un Te Amo" starts things off on a breezy yet emotive note, while "Con Tus Besos" revisits energetic, '70s-style horn-laden pop. This slightly funky style is also present on songs such as "Eres," "Y Sigo," and "Vuelve," conjuring up images of a Spanish Solid Gold-like variety show. Of course, no Miguel album would be complete without a few ballads, and he delivers on tracks such as "Nos Hizo Falta Tiempo," "Ahora Que Te Vas," and the album-closing "Que Hacer." ---Rovi

It's a wonder what took Luis Miguel so long to enlist Latin maestro Manuel Alejandro to write and produce one of his projects. As one of the most prolific and respected songwriters in Latin pop -- his clientele is a who's who that includes Julio Iglesias, Plácido Domingo, Raphael, and José José, to name but a few -- the tunesmith's timeless, smooth compositions are a natural fit for the crooner. But Cómplices is more than just their first all-out collaboration: it's the first time Miguel ever hands over the reins of a recording entirely to a third party. He's worked with his share of legends, but never has El Sol De México, no matter how legendary the contributor, had one person handle everything -- from songwriting all the way to arrangements and production. Alejandro's eye for detail as a composer is exquisite, anyway, so the relinquishment doesn't result in a big sonic departure for the vocalist, even if the songs do follow a dark thematic line -- in terms of love songs, at least, this is perhaps the most somber, hopeless set of compositions Miguel has ever sung. For someone who has made a name for himself singing ballads and Latin standards -- his Romances saga attests that much -- the brand of love Cómplices champions is the kind that can be sensual and torrid one moment, only to cheat and break hearts the next. Poetically, the material is flawless, even beautiful, but a deeper analysis sheds light on a far from perfect version of love. This love fakes kisses ("Bravo, Amor, Bravo"), fears commitment ("De Nuevo El Paraíso"), steals partners ("Se Amaban"), and is on the verge of falling apart ("Dicen") -- far from the kind of record you put on as you wine and dine a romantic interest. That's not to say Cómplices isn't a romantic album. In spots, it certainly is, but it doesn't go beyond mere romance -- the one-night stand, an illicit affair, sweet nothings whispered in the ear. Cómplices paints such a bleak, depressing picture of what love ought to be, it's easily the most hopelessly romantic disc of Miguel's career -- pristinely executed by Latin pop standards, yet ironic coming from the biggest loverman in all of Latin music. Could this be the musical companion to the singer's sensational tabloid persona? You be the judge. ---Andree Farias, Rovi

Luis Miguel can do whatever he wants. With a catalog of hits like his, a string of platinum records, and an unstoppable Billboard presence, anything with Miguel's name on it is guaranteed a certain level of success. Such is certainly the case with his 2006 release, Navidades. This collection of yuletide favorites landed the number one spot in both the Latin Pop and Top Latin Albums categories on the Billboard charts. It was unquestionably the most popular Spanish-language Christmas record of the year, and its presence will probably linger for years to come. Knowing that Miguel can do whatever he wants without fearing failure or criticism, the important question that remains for Navidades is: why? Granted, Luis Miguel has always lingered in the borderlands that separate Latin and pop, favoring the sweet over the salty. Navidades does not linger, but crosses over completely, or perhaps more accurately, goes off the deep end. Artists like Harry Connick, Jr. and Michael Bublé can do a throwback big-band record successfully, because they're committed to it; it's what they do. Miguel's record, on the other hand, while technically perfect, with razor-sharp arrangements and production, has not a drop of class or elegance that comes with such commitment. The repertoire choices are more silly than playful and his performances hit overkill by the first chorus on virtually every track. Miguel in a cheap Santa suit brandishing a glass of whiskey and a cigarette between his lips may be more truthful advertising than the candlelight photo that actually adorns the cover. What made Luis Miguel fancy himself a jazz vocalist? The world may never know. Luckily for him, his stylistic insensitivity will probably go completely unnoticed, as there's an established history of bad Christmas records that sell incredibly well. ---Evan C.
